For my birthday my dad bought me a Simplicity Sovereign 3212V. This was a beast of a tractor from the 1960's, with a torquey 12 horsepower Briggs. The one thing I didn't care for on this one was the transmission. It was Simplicity's Variable Drive which still used their great 3 speed transmission, but they put a variable drive system on it to give you seven ranges in each gear. The problem was that it was almost like a CVT transmission, and the way it changed ranges was the pulley would narrow and widen causing the belt to go closer or further to the central axis, changing it's speed. But after 40 years of wear the belt would slip badly, causing it to come to a stop sometimes while in gear. It did pretty good with the Weedcutter but with the hill in my yard it couldn't mow.
